The Nootropic Stack, Version 4

5 min readJersey

My current cognitive optimization protocol after three years of iteration. What stayed, what got cut, and why.

Three years of testing. Four major revisions. Dozens of compounds tried, tracked, and either kept or discarded based on subjective experience backed by bloodwork. This is version 4 — the current stack.

The Core Stack

Lion's Mane (1g daily) — the only nootropic I have never removed. Nerve growth factor support that I can feel in sustained focus sessions. Takes 2-3 weeks to notice, but once it builds, removing it is immediately obvious.

Alpha-GPC (300mg, morning) — choline source. Supports the acetylcholine system. Noticeable difference in verbal fluency, especially during client calls and presentations.

L-Theanine (200mg) + Caffeine (100mg) — the classic stack for a reason. Smooth focus without jitters. I use this as the daily baseline.

What Got Cut

Modafinil — too aggressive. The focus was real but it came at the cost of creativity and interpersonal warmth. Great for mechanical tasks, terrible for the kind of synthesis work I do.

Phenylpiracetam — tolerance built too fast. Effective for 3-4 days, then diminishing returns. Not worth cycling.

The Philosophy

Optimization is not about maximizing a single variable. It is about finding the configuration that supports the full range of what you need to do. I need deep focus for building. I need social fluency for selling. I need creative looseness for writing. No single compound optimizes all three. The stack does.
